Essential Understandings

Concrete:

  • Use objects to complete a five frame.
     (Ex: given a five frame with four counters already included, have student add one more counter to fill the 5 frame).
  • Given 5 objects, the student will separate them into two separate sets to show different ways to make 5. (Ex: 2 objects in one set and 3 in the other).
Representation:
  • Use a number line to count on from a given number to 5. (Ex: place counter on the number 2 on the number line and student will count the number of ‘units’ to get to the number 5).
