Clarifications:
Essential Understandings
Concrete:
- Use objects to complete a five frame.
(Ex: given a five frame with four counters already included, have student add one more counter to fill the 5 frame).
- Given 5 objects, the student will separate them into two separate sets to show different ways to make 5. (Ex: 2 objects in one set and 3 in the other).
- Use a number line to count on from a given number to 5. (Ex: place counter on the number 2 on the number line and student will count the number of ‘units’ to get to the number 5).

Cluster:
Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. (Major Cluster) : Clusters should not be sorted from Major to Supporting and then taught in that order. To do so would strip the coherence of the mathematical ideas and miss the opportunity to enhance the major work of the grade with the supporting clusters. |
