Students must use the fact that i2 = -1 (N.CN.2), and students should be able to deduce that i3 = -i, and i4 = 1. The expressions may be simplified more readily if students know about and have skills with common binomial factors, the factored form of the difference of two squares, and applying the associative property. (A-SSE.2, MP.7) Determining the best and appropriate strategy which will lead to an efficient method of simplifying each expression is a primary goal of this resource.
