MA.912.G.3.1Archived Standard

Describe, classify, and compare relationships among quadrilaterals including the square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, and kite.

Remarks

This benchmark examines properties of quadrilaterals one at a time.

Example: Explore a trapezoid through manipulatives, drawings and/or technology. Draw the diagonals and determine whether they are perpendicular. Give a convincing argument that your judgment is correct.

General Information
Subject Area: X-Mathematics (former standards - 2008)
Grade: 912
Body of Knowledge: Geometry
Idea: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts
Standard: Quadrilaterals - Classify and understand relationships among quadrilaterals (rectangle, parallelogram, kite, etc.). Relate geometry to algebra by using coordinate geometry to determine regularity, congruence, and similarity. Use properties of congruent and similar quadrilaterals to solve problems involving lengths and areas, and prove theorems involving quadrilaterals.

Teaching Idea

An Introduction To Quadrilaterals:

This lesson is designed to introduce students to quadrilaterals and the terms and properties associated with quadrilaterals. This lesson provides links to discussions and activities related to quadrilaterals as well as suggested ways to integrate them into the lesson. Finally, the lesson provides links to follow-up lessons designed for use in succession with the current one.

Virtual Manipulative

Quadrilateral Classification Game:

This interactive, online activity challenges students to "draw" quadrilaterals with specific characteristics by moving vertices on a coordinate grid. Challenge exercises are presented in an additional investigation after students complete the initial tasks.
