Students will explore the use of mean and median in finding the ratio of a set of data. They will collect this set of data by doing a trash pick-up service learning project and then weighing the weight of the trash collected in bags. The students will discuss the use of mean and median in finding the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of the data collected. They will also look at the positive and negative correlations of this relationship, as displayed on a scatter plot they created. In comparison, they will then look at the data collected from the coastal cleanup report and compare this with their own data. Finally, students will use the data to help determine interventions at the local, state and national level regarding environmental issues.
