Career Connection
How does the lesson help students build industry content knowledge?
This lesson helps students build industry content knowledge about warning signs that may indicate a medical emergency during exercise. Students also learn ways to appropriately respond when a client may be experiencing physical distress.
How does this lesson embed and help students develop career/durable skills for the future? Choose one or more of the durable skill domains and elaborate.
In the domain of communication, students will practice the skills of presentation and verbal communication through the presentation of their ideas and completed infographic to the class. Students will be expected to clearly communicate their infographics, thoughts, and ideas to the class with their groups.
In the domain of collaboration, students will be expected to demonstrate their ability to collaborate effectively through working with their group members to create the infographic. Students will be expected to collaborate with their group members, share ideas with their group, respond to conflicting ideas of group members respectfully, and participate in making decisions about their infographic that the group as a whole agrees on.
In the domain of metacognition, students will demonstrate their ability to identify health-related warning signs exhibited by a personal training client and take into consideration the health profile of the client to choose an appropriate response(s) to those warning signs. Students will be expected to justify the conclusions they came to within their groups of what the proper response(s) is/are to each of the warning signs identified.
-
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify the warning signs Betty experienced in the case study, “Warn Me Betty One More Time”.
- Explain an appropriate response to each warning sign identified to ensure Betty’s safety.
- Work with a small group to create an infographic specific to Betty’s health conditions that outlines possible warning signs that she should be aware of and the appropriate response(s) to each
- Present the infographic to the class and justify the group’s conclusions of appropriate responses to each warning sign exhibited.
-
Prior Knowledge
Students should be familiar with:
- the definition of ‘warning signs’ as it relates to the field of Personal Training
- basic emergency procedures and an understanding of when they are necessary
- Canva, Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, or some other digital creation source to use for the creation of their infographic
- how to use a rubric as a tool to complete a project to the best of their ability
-
Guiding Questions
- What are some examples of warning signs that a person could exhibit before working out that could signal a possible emergency situation?
- During a workout?
- After working out?
- What are some possible responses to warning signs that could potentially help a client avoid an emergency situation?
-
Procedure
1. Display the following quote and instructions on the board:
“If you ignore the warning signs, a tragedy awaits you ahead.” – Cory J. Herndon
Discuss in pairs: In what ways does the quote relate to personal training?
2. After a few minutes, allow students to share their thinking with the class.
- Make sure students understand that warning signs need to be acknowledged and addressed in a timely manner. Otherwise, the symptom may turn into a medical emergency and which may become dangerous for the client.
3. Activate prior knowledge by asking the class how the term ‘warning sign’ could be defined, specifically as it relates to personal training.
- Allow a few minutes of discussion, then guide the response to a final result of “warning signs are signs exhibited by clients outside of the typical body responses to exercise that could signal a potential health threat or emergency situation.”
4. Introduce case study, “Warn Me Betty One More Time,” and have students read independently.
5. After reading the case study, pose the following questions to the class to the get the students thinking. Allow for brief discussion and sharing of thoughts between the students with no teacher feedback or clarification:
- In what ways do Betty’s exhibited warning signs relate to her specific health conditions?
- How could Violet have handled the sessions differently to better ensure Betty’s safety as a client?
- What are some things that Violet could do to avoid situations similar to the one’s described in the case study in the future?
6. Introduce the Activity:
- Students will work in small groups to take on the role of Betty’s personal trainer, Violet. Each group will create an infographic that Violet could present to Betty that outlines warning signs specific to her health conditions and appropriate responses/emergency procedures for each to ensure Betty’s safety when working out with or without out her personal trainer present.
- Each group will present their infographic to the class upon completion.
- As groups present their infographics, they will explain their thinking behind why they chose the responses/emergency procedures for each warning sign identified.
- This should be a professional presentation geared toward real world application in the workplace, so students should check their work for proper use of conventions and terminology.
- Students can use Canva, Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, or any other approved media source.
7. After all groups have presented, respectful class discussion will be encouraged and peer feedback will be given focusing on whether or not the conclusions drawn by the groups were accurate or if they overlooked/omitted important information when deciding how to respond to each warning sign. The teacher can correct misconceptions if they arise, but acts mostly as a moderator during this discussion.
8. To wrap up the lesson, pose the following Future of Work reflection questions to the class:
- How could you use the infographic you created with future personal training clients?
- How could you adapt the infographic for clients with varying health conditions, injuries, and/or physical disabilities?
What types of things could a personal trainer do to better ensure the safety of all future clients before, during, and after sessions?
-
Teacher Notes
The students can be grouped prior to giving instructions for the activity or after. Either you can group them or they can group themselves, but groups of 2-4 work best for this lesson and activity.
