• Procedure

  
  

  Introduction:

  Have the students discuss, or write a definition of ten words or less, a description of the term nepotism. After students share, make sure to give a simple definition on the board. Alternatively, have students use ten words or less to answer the question, “What role in a company is most important for its success?” For example, the owner, accountant, HR representative, etc.

  Case Study:

  Teacher will assign groups or teams. Provide students with a copy of the case study, “Business Delegation with a Twist,” (See CPALMS resource ID# 221964). Have students read the case study independently first, then together as a group. Provide groups with the following Discussion Questions (see attachment). Have students discuss first in small groups and then share together with the class.

  • What are some of the issues that are arising within the dealership?
  • How are these issues affecting Lucas’ goals for the business?
  • How could Jackson and Martha work together to improve the onboarding process?
  • How could these issues benefit from effective communication?
  • Why is employee retention and recruitment essential to help grow Lucas’ business?

  Students will role play to determine possible solutions for the company to be successful. Teacher can assign characters from the case study to the students, example: one student can be Jackson from the case study, one could be Martha, and so on, or the students can each choose their character from the case study.

  They will role-play and discuss alternative ways to see a positive outcome for the company. Individually, students will write a 2-3 paragraph outcome to the case study with what they think the best outcome would be. Written outcomes should include a solution from one or more character point of views.

  Closure:

  To close the lesson, have the students reflect on the following future of work questions.

  • Why are relationships important in industry?
  • What characteristics do you have that would make you successful in a collaborative workplace?
  • What are some challenges to being a business owner? What are some challenges to being a manager?
