  Knowing different diets for disease processes and how they help improve patients' overall health will provide the nurse with the basic foundation for patient teaching. In this lesson, students will collaborate together, an important skill that nurses need to be able to collaborate with other disciplines at the hospital to aid with nutritional needs for the patients. The student will learn effective communication to use when a patient asks why they have a specific diet. The nurse can communicate the information appropriately to the patient and their family.

  • Use the key vocabulary in writing a nutritional plan.
  • Create a digital nutritional plan for a patient with many comorbidities.

  • Different types of diets and their restrictions
  • Hypertension, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Diabetes Mellites Type II, Myocardial Infarct, Osteoarthritis

  What is the importance of providing specific nutritional plans for different disease processes?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. Provide the class with the list of “industry key terms” and “Different Diet Plans” worksheet (See attached).

  2. The students will pick out six different diet plans used in the hospital setting for medical-surgical patients from the key terms list. (Heart-Healthy, Carb-Controlled, etc.) and will list the foods included in each diet and the benefits of each diet.

  3. While they complete the worksheet, discuss with the class items on their lists and clarify any misconceptions.

  4. Provide the case study “Bob Has GERD Again.” See CPALMS resource ID# 221969. Allow students time to read it individually. Ask students the following questions after reading the case study.

  • What would you do first before you begin to make a meal plan?
  • Who would be involved in the creation of the meal plan?
  • How would you present your meal plan to the patient and their family?
  • Why does the patient need help with the meal plan?
  • What are some possible concerns with the medications prescribed?

  5. Provide the students time to discuss and find answers to the questions with a partner. The partners will then create their digital nutritional plan for Bob to support his comorbidities.

  • Include two different dietary plans.
  • List five different foods and three drinks for each dietary plan.
  • Must include two to three industry key terms.

  6. To bring the lesson to a close by having the students share their digital nutritional plans with the class.

  7. Teacher can also discuss as a whole class, future of work reflection questions which may include (see below).

  • How will knowing nutritional plans help you care for a patient with multiple comorbidities?
  • How does following the proper nutritional plan promote health and healing?
