  This lesson helps students understand the boundaries of teacher behavior in the classroom and how unethical behaviors have consequences. In the domain of character, students will discuss how a real-life scenario in which an individual does not portray reliable, accountable, or professional traits. In the domain of metacognition, students use planning, diplomacy, goal setting, and constructive feedback to accomplish a standard based goal.

  • What are possible conclusions that students can infer about ethical and unethical behaviors?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. The teacher will pose the question, “Is it ever okay to blur the line between being a friend and a teacher?” Have students turn and talk with a partner and then come together and discuss as a whole group.
  2. Give students the case study “Yoga Ball Bonanza” CPALMS resource ID #221974. Have students read independently and highlight Katie’s behavior that is considered ethical in green and the unethical behavior in pink. (any two different highlighter colors).
  3. Provide students with the following case study analysis questions (see handout case study questions):
     1. What do you think the outcome would be if Katie was male?
     2. Why do you think Katie doesn’t reach out to her neighbor teachers?
     3. How does social media influence teachers to have the “perfect classroom”?
     4. How does being a new teacher affect Katie?
     5. How does society impact your choice to choose education as a career field?
     6. How did you use problem-solving and critical thinking during this activity? Are these typical skills you tend to use?
     7. Before this activity, have you ever thought about being a principal? How does being the principal change your perspective on being in the education field?
  4. Allow students take time to answer the questions individually. After they have all answered the questions, pair the students up to discuss the answers to the questions. Allow enough time for academic conversations to be held by the students and then bring the class back to whole group and disucss as a whole group.
  5. After the class discussion, give students the prompt: "What should happen to Katie?" Allow time for students to process information and formulate an answer. Have students volunteer their answers while recording responses on the board.
  6. Explain that students will be creating a response to the case study problem as Mr. Kurt. Give students the PD Calendar Handout, this has Professional Development trainings that Mr. Kurt should reccommend Katie attend in his email. Students will formulate an email from Mr. Kurt to Katie explaining that she is not behaving ethically. Students will work individually to create an email from the perspective of Mr. Kurt. Guiding questions to formulate an email repsonse can be found on the calendar attachment.
  7. Once students have completed their email, return to whole group and ask the question, “How would you feel if you got Mr. Kurt's email?" Select 2-3 students to answer the question.
  8. To close the lesson, have students reflect on the following questions individually or in whole group (see future employment attachment):
     1. How might the skills you used be used in different situations: at home, with friends, or as a student?
     2. How does this affect your thinking about your future and making plans to be in the education field?
     3. As you prepare for the workforce, how does having these experiences help you?
     4. How does society impact your choice to choose education as a career field?
     5. How did you use problem-solving and critical thinking during this activity? Are these typical skills you tend to use?
