  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Group Work Ethics.” See CPALMS resource ID#221970.

  Using the case study, “Group Work Ethics” students will analyze and discuss the work ethics of a group and analyze potential benefits and consequences. Some of the ethics represented are positive and some are negative. Students will respond to questions that elicit discussion specific to the individuals in the scenario. Students will design a digital poster of the work ethics represented.

  What are possible implications for positive and negative work ethics in the workplace?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson the teacher can, describe what "work ethic" means and how it is different from ethical behavior. Provide examples of each and ask the students if they have examples of both ethical behavior and work ethics (Positive and negative).

  2. Provide the students with a copy of the case study ID:221970 and allow them time to read individually.

  3. Teacher can then place the students in small groups. Ask students to identify the different work ethics illustrated in the story. Provide students with the attached disussion questions. Students can then discuss the groups dynamics and identify examples of work ethics (see questions below):

  • How would you describe the current group dynamics?
  • How can Shelly’s actions of stepping up negatively affect the group?
  • If you were the team leader what would you do differently?
  • How can Shelly’s actions of stepping up negatively affect the group?
  • What is the difference between someone choosing to have poor work ethic and when it’s something that may be out of their control?

  4. Once students have finished the discussion questions, in their small groups they should design a poster of the different work ethics represented in the case study.

  • The poster should include:
    • Examples of positive work ethics and negative work ethics.
  • The students should list behaviors from the case study as well.

  5. After the posters are complete, ask the students to read the posters of their peers in a small group and discuss the implications of both postive and negative work ethics on both employees and employers.

  • The Students should be able to identify work ethics from each employee on their poster.

  5. To close the lesson teacher can pose the following questions related to future work in a career. Then there can be a whole class discussion.

  • Based on this lesson, what are some ways that you have learned to handle coworkers with a poor work ethic?
  • After learning about work ethics how would you train someone, that was just hired with your company, to have a positive work ethic?
