  • Why is it important for property managers to ensure the safety of their employees?
  • What information is critical to know when handling chemicals at work?

• Procedure

  
  

  Hook: Ask the students to think about substances in their homes that help them if used properly but can be harmful if used improperly (e.g., the laundry soap pods help clean clothes but small children sometimes think they are food and get sick eating them; bleach can be used to kill dangerous mold but can also cause injury if it gets on your skin or in your eyes). Have them talk about ways we can learn ways that safety information is shared (ex. labels, experienced users sharing information, posters).

  1. To introduce the lesson, arrange the students into groups and have them read and discuss the "pHun with Pools" Case Study (see CPALMS Resource ID #220230). Use these questions to guide discussion:

  • Who is the property manager?
  • What chemicals are being used to keep the pool clean?
  • What safety information has been provided related to the chemicals? (be sure students are given the case study attachment, "Louis' Notes for Gwen")

  2. Share the following information with the groups: “Gwen decides its time to hire an assistant, Kelsie, to maintain the pool and other public areas of the Magnolia Farms community. Gwen wants to make sure that Kelsie is safe around all the equipment and pool chemicals.”

  3. Tell the groups that today they will play the role of Gwen by researching safety information for the muriatic acid and developing the safety protocol she will share with Kelsie.

  • Have groups first discuss why it would be important for Gwen, as the property manager, to create a safety protocol for Kelsie
  • Provide each group with a copy of the MSDS sheet for muriatic acid. See the Teacher Notes for a suggested link.
  • Have them highlight the information that they think would be most important to share with Kelsie.
  • Direct their attention to information related to safety as needed. Share the single replacement reaction of muriatic acid (HCl) with metal (aluminum).

  6HCl + 2Al ? 2AlCl3 + 3H2(g)

  • • Discuss how the reaction results in very dangerous Hydrogen gas being released.
    • Discuss potential ways the muriatic acid could come in contact with metal (garbage cans, pool equipment)

  4. Groups will then develop a safety protocol to share with Kelsie. It should be in the form of a visual (flyer) or informational document that can be “posted” in the work area. The protocol should include:

  • Protection needed to be worn when handling muriatic acid
  • Dangers of contact with muriatic acid
  • Reaction of muriatic acid to other materials
  • Clean-up recommendation
  • Storage recommendation

  5. To bring the lesson to a close, have groups share their protocols and use the attached Rubric to peer-evaluate.

  Have students use the Future of Work Questions for student reflection:

  • What role to property managers have in promoting safe practices?
  • What are ways that employers can share safety information with their employees?
