  • Why is it important to recognize different personality styles before a conflict starts?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Start with an opening question: Have you ever worked on a group project where different personalities clashed? What happened?
  2. Review a few common personality styles with students to help them recognize different workplace behaviors. For example:
     • Organizers: Detail-oriented, structured, prefer plans and timelines
     • Creatives: Idea-driven, imaginative, prefer flexibility and innovation
     • Analytical Thinkers: Logical, data-focused, prefer clarity and evidence
     • Supporters: Empathetic, team-oriented, prefer harmony and collaboration
  3. Briefly introduce the case study, “Can We Please Work as a Team?" (see CPALMS resource ID# 220509). Students will read the case study individually. Then, engage students in a discussion about the case study with the following questions:
     • What are some of the issues that the team is having?
     • What could each individual do to help resolve the problem?
  4. Divide the class into groups of 5 students. Each group will:
     • Discuss the case study together.
     • Divide each character in the case among students within each group. Have students identify the personality style that best matches the character they are assigned (Mohit, Saloni, Sachet, Saurav, Aditya). Each student should research common traits of the personality style, famous examples, strengths of the personality style, barriers to working with someone that has the personality style, and strategies for working with that personality style. Provide each student with the attached handout (Personality Types) to complete their research.
     • Discuss how the different styles helped or hurt the project in the case study.

  5. After the group research and discussion, bring the whole class back together for a debrief. Read out the name of each character from the case (Mohit, Saloni, Sachet, Saurav, and Aditya) one at a time, and ask the students to identify what personality style they think each person represents.

     • If the entire class agrees on a character’s personality trait, the teacher can move on to the next name.

     • If different groups have identified different personality styles for the same character, the teacher will invite students to explain their reasoning and discuss the differences in interpretation.
  6. To close the lesson, ask studnets the following reflection questions:
     • How can understanding personality styles help you succeed in your future career?
     • What personality style do you see in yourself? What does that tell you about the type of coworker you will be?
