• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, conduct a brief review of the following industry vocabulary terms that students will need to understand for the case study and activity: file extension, export, format, unsupported, invalid, encoded, download.
     • Some review ideas include having students share their definitions with a shoulder partner, provide students with a definition and have them decide on the correct word, or providing each student with either a word or a definition and having them find the student with the matching card.
  2. Next, introduce the case study, “Failed to Upload,” (see CPALMS Resource ID#215500. Distribute copies of the case study to each student. Have them read independently or in small groups and take annotations about their thoughts and ideas in the margins.
  3. After reading the case study, ask students the following questions.
     • What types of file extensions and systems are referenced in the case study?
     • What other steps could Kyra take to troubleshoot?
     • What else could Kyra try to do to avoid this technical issue in the future?
     • What are some solutions to Kyra’s dilemma?
     • If you were faced with the same problem as Kyra, how would you propose to find a solution?
     • If you were Kyra, what would you do and how do you know your solution would work?
  4. Then, introduce the directions and expectations for the following integrated research activity. Students will work in groups to research one type of file system or extension more in depth.
  5. Provide students with the Research Notes handout (see attachments) that they should complete while researching.
     • Students will be researching advantages and disadvantages, common uses, common technical issues, and compatibility requirements.
     • Remind students that their research should come from credible online sources, such as appropriate tech support or commonly trusted sites.
  6. Assign groups one of the file systems or file extension types below to further research.
     • File Systems: FAT, exFAT, NTFS, APFS HFS/HFS+, Ext4
     • File Extensions: GIF, SVG, JPEG, AVI, MP3
  7. After students have completed their research, bring the groups back together to share some of their research notes. As a class, apply this knowledge to the case study by deciding on a plan of action that Kyra could take to troubleshoot her issue.
  8. To close the lesson, have students reflect on the following questions.
     • How did researching file systems/extensions help you better troubleshoot a similar issue?
     • How can you apply this learning of different file extensions/systems in the future if you worked in digital media?
     • How does collaboration with colleague’s help aid in problem solving?
     • What steps of this learning process would be most beneficial in an office setting?
