  Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate accuracy of EKG electrodes and lead placement.
  • Identify EKG leads and groups for special considerations.
  • Describe electrode placement and the use of different leads.
  • Demonstrate a role play of appropriate ethical and legal practices when accurately placing and EKG lead.

  1. Why is it important to have knowledge of basic Anatomy & Physiology of the heart?

  2. What are the necessary components of EKG acquisition?

  3. Why is it important to assess and prepare skin for electrode placement?

  4. How would you apply electrodes to the skin or area that is compromised?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Introduce the lesson and review the instructions on EKG acquisitions for patients with special considerations.
  2. Distribute the Electrodes and Leads by Example Journal handout (see attachments) and instruct students to journal case-related terms on EKG acquisitions. Use the first example on the handout to model for students how to fill out the chart.
  3. Distribute the Case study, "Electrodes Leads by Example" (see CPALMS Resource ID #215733). Assign students into small groups of four. Instruct students to read the case study and annotate all medical terms on the journal handout, critique the characters' actions and decide what alternative actions (if any) should be taken. Have students discuss the following:
     • What special consideration is exhibited in this case study?
     • How would the EKG student modify electrode application for a patient with below the knee amputation?
     • What symptoms were the patient exhibiting?
  4. Students will then be paired with lab partner and actively simulate the case study's narrative and/or one of the following special considerations: 12-lead EKG; Ambulatory monitoring (Holter event); Stress testing; Telemetry; Dextrocardia; Posterior chest; Amputation; and Pediatric patients.
     • The student portraying the healthcare professional will demonstrate skills acquisition for a special consideration randomly assigned from drawing an "electrode acquisition skills card.” See Teacher Notes for instructions on the cards.
     • The student playing the role of the patient will simulate the associated signs, symptoms, or characteristics of selected skill.
     • Students must also exhibit indirect care OSHA and HIPAA guidelines as needed.
     • Teachers can provide a step-by-step skills checklist to students as desired.
  5. To bring this lesson to a close, upon lab practice students will create a video demonstrating assigned skill acquisitions.
     • The class will view the videos and give constructive feedback.

  • In preparation to introducing the lesson plan, special considerations acquisition skills flashcards can be created and printed on index cards for lab exercise. Use the special considerations listed in Step 4 of the Procedure.
  • A Display timer is needed for the last round of analysis in the closing activities. Many medical-themed timers can be found online.
