  Students will be able to:

  • Complete a job application with accurate and updated information
  • Determine characteristics of an effective job application by comparing job applications posted online to a sample application used in class

  • What information is often requested on a job application?
  • Why do some employers require job applications in addition to resumes from prospective employees?
  • What information from job applications and resumes do employers use to decide which applicant to hire?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To begin, have students read the “Filling a Job Vacancy” case study.
     
     
  2. After students have read through the case study, ask the following questions:
  • “What steps will Dr. Morales need to take to hire a new employee?” (sample answers: advertise or post the job online, collect applications and resumes, interview candidates, check references, etc.)
  • “How do employers decide which applicant to hire?”
  • “One step in the hiring process is having each candidate complete a job application. Why do you think that employers, like Dr. Morales, ask each person to complete a job application?”
    
    
  3. Tell students that this lesson will focus on job applications.
     
     
  4. Tell students that the purpose of a job application is to create an organized format that makes it easier to compare prospective employees. Employers typically interview only the top few candidates, who they select based on information on their job application and resume, if collected.
     
     
  5. Show students the Job Application Worksheet. Discuss the types of information included on a job application.
     
     
  6. Activity #1: Completing a Job Application
  • Provide students with a copy of the Sample Resume/Background Information and the Job Application Worksheet.
  • Students will use the Sample Resume and Background Information to fill in a job application for the medical receptionist position at ABC Pediatrics.
    
    
  7. Activity #2: Comparing Job Applications
  • Provide students with a copy of the Comparing Job Applications Worksheet.
  • Have students search online for a job application for a career they are interested in and compare that application to the one in the lesson.
  • Closure: Answer the follow-up questions on this assignment.

  • Students can work in pairs to complete the activity.
  • The teacher may want to determine which websites students should navigate in order to find appropriate resumes to compare with the sample resume presented in the lesson.
  • Computers and internet access are needed for the research part of the lesson.

  Formative Assessment Ideas:

  • Informally assess students learning through the group discussion.
  • Student answers on the worksheets can also be used to evaluate students’ understanding of the elements of a successful resume.

  Extension Ideas:

  • Students could complete the Job Application Worksheet with their personal information as if they were “applying” for an age-appropriate job or position (ex. Student Government President, Bagger at local grocery story, Summer Camp Counselor, volunteer at a local hospital, etc.).
