  • Create a multi-media product to show one of the possible outcomes of a scenario.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher can start with a fun activity that gets the students up and moving. Have the students play a, “Would you rather game?” (see attachment Handout1 with possible questions). Ask the students questions and have them move to one side of the room or the other. You can use the pre-made questions or you can make your own questions.
  2. After a few rounds of this ask the students if they answered based on their own feelings and thoughts or if they decided to follow the crowd or do what their friend did. This should be a good step to introduce the conversation that your decisions can affect other people and may have an influence.
  3. Pre-read the case study and review some key words that the students might encounter in the case study. Some words might include, “outcomes,” “solutions,” and “trustworthy.”
  4. Read the background information on the case study to the students. Allow students to ask clarifying questions.
  5. Project the case study on the document camera or available technology and talk about the overarching question, “How can personal decisions affect the outcome of different situations?”
  6. Next pass out the case study and have students break into pre-selected groups (see Teacher Notes). Have the students read the case study.
  7. After reading the case study allow students time to share what they think Sally will do and different outcomes that might come from her decisions.
     • Sample Teacher Questions:
     • What would happen if Sally followed Tommy?
     • How do you think Sally’s parents would react if they found out Sally took a different route home?
     • How might Sally’s decision affect her friendship with Tommy?
     • How might Sally’s decision affect her parents?
  8. After the discussion, pass out Handout 2 (see attachments). Have students pretend that Sally has decided what to do, and have students draw a picture that represents the outcome from Sally’s decision.
     • For example, if the student pretends that Sally decided to go with Tommy, they might draw a picture of the two walking together or them with the rocks. If they pretend that Sally did not go with Tommy, they might draw Sally walking down the road by herself.
     • Give students the opportunity to be creative but still thinking about which outcome would be best for Sally to make.
     • After the students draw and color their pictures, have them write two sentences about how Sally’s choice will affect others in the scenario.
  9. To bring the lesson to a close, have students present their drawing in small groups then tell what decision they chose for Sally and describe the possible outcome. Students can discuss why the outcomes were different.

  • Since students will create a multi-media product, use supplies already available in the classroom like construction paper, felt, clipart, etc.
