  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Be Careful What You Post Online!” See CPALMS resource ID#207990.

  In this lesson students will reflect and analyze future consequences of current decisions that they make. They will take into consideration how their past and present digital footprint could affect and have consequences on their job prospect or career.

  • Define privacy in relation to digital footprint.
  • Discuss future implications of their digital footprint on their privacy.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, refer to the case study, Be Careful What You Post Online, (see CPALMS Resource ID#207990).
  • Consider providing students with a copy of the case study so they can take notes, highlight content vocabulary. Or underline important details.

  2. Pose the following discussion questions as the case study is read.

  • What is a digital footprint?
  • Why is your digital footprint so important in today’s world?
  3. Students will get in groups of no more than 4 for about 10 minutes to discuss the questions above.
  4. Teacher will then make a list of answers given from all the groups on the board and emphasize how important a digital footprint is.
  5. Students will be given a sheet of paper to draw/illustrate their digital footprint which will include the word displayed in the middle of the paper in big letters and the definition written under it, then around it they will draw arrows all around it listing where all their digital footprints come from. They can have the option to draw the icon or a symbol that represents the sites that they visit while on the internet. At the bottom of page, they are to lists 3 ways students can protect the privacy of their digital footprint.
  6. To bring the lesson to a close, have students get back in their original groups and discuss some of the things that Jeff should have though about or done with his digital footprint. Then have one student from each group to share out loud their solutions on what Jeff could have done differently on his digital footprints.

  • Students can draw an image that represents their digital footprint.
  • Following are some potential definitions of a digital footprint and examples of online activities that make up a digital footprint.
    • Digital Footprint is any online activity that you post, comment, watch, play games on or visit, text messages or emails that you send as well as information that you share with any online services or anyone.
    • Digital footprint is your online virtual trail.
    • Some examples of sites that can be listed by students that make up their digital footprints on their one pager are Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit, Tumblr, Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, any online stores that they may have viewed or purchased merchandise from (Amazon, Nike, Shein, Dillard, Adidas, etc.), games sites that they visit.

  Formative Assessment Ideas:

  • The one pager and group discussion can be used to determine student understanding of how their digital footprint(s) can play a role in their job prospects and even their career.

  Accommodation Suggestions:

  • Give them an example of a one pager filled out with a few information on it with the expectation that the student will change and/or fill it out with their information.

  Extension Ideas:

  • Students can create a poster on Digital Footprint. At the top of the paper/poster they can put the definition of a digital footprint and then have students draw a line down the center to make 2 columns with the headings being Positive Digital Footprint(s) vs. Negative Digital Footprint(s) and then lists all the things under each column that can be done to have a positive or negative digital footprint.
