  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “We Need to Hire” (See CPALMS resource ID# 207939).

  This lesson introduces career options in a setting familiar to students - a pediatrician’s office. Students can use this information to evaluate their interests in the careers described.

  Students will be able to:

  • Evaluate needs within a clinical setting to determine what position to hire.
  • Classify careers into the five medical career pathways.
  • Justify their reasoning and cite text evidence from two resources to support their answers.

  • Collaboration as is necessary between workers in a clinical setting to provide optimal care to patients.

  • How do needs within an organization impact hiring choices/decisions?
  • What options exist for careers in a pediatrician’s office?
  • How do those careers fit within the five healthcare career pathways?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Activate prior knowledge by asking students to brainstorm jobs/roles within a pediatrician’s office. This introduces the concept that multiple careers are available in the doctor’s office setting and engages students by getting them to think about their own experiences. The careers that students identify can be written on the board for reference later, if desired. (The brainstorm list could be later compared to the careers on the Career Position Descriptions Resource that is attached to the case study.)
  2. Review key terms from the case study that students might be unfamiliar with, such as medical practice, administer (medications), payroll, escort (v.), stocked, and wellness check. These words/definitions could be written on the board and/or projected for students to refer to as they read the case study.
  3. Pass out the Case Study: We Need to Hire to students. Provide each student with a copy so they can take notes, highlight vocabulary, and/or underline important details as they read.
     • Save the Healthcare Career Position Descriptions Resource for later in the lesson.
     • Students will read the case study independently or in groups.
  4. After providing a few minutes for students to read the case study, have groups discuss the story. Suggested discussion questions:
     
     • What careers were introduced that the class did not previously identify?
     • What is happening in the story? What changed from the beginning of the story to the end of the story?
  5. Pass out the We Need to Hire Student Worksheet and the Healthcare Career Position Descriptions Resource (see the case study attachment). to each group. Students will work together to complete the Student Worksheet using the case study and Healthcare Career Position Descriptions Resource.
  • The worksheet asks students to identify the problems and possible consequences of not correcting the problems, determine and justify/support which position to hire, and determine the Medical Career Pathway for each of the careers listed.
  • The teacher should circulate as students are working to guide discussion and monitor behavior. Possible questions to guide discussion include:
    • Why/how are the events that are happening having a negative impact on providing medical care?
    • What text evidence supports your answer(s)?
    • Can another argument be made?
    • Can you think of other careers that would fit into each Medical Career Pathway?
  6. To bring the lesson to a close, each group can share their choice and reasoning/argument with the class.
     • Optional: The We Need to Hire Exit Ticket can be given to add another variable to the decision (salary) and to ask students to evaluate their interest in the careers described in this lesson.

  • This lesson is designed for students to work in groups. The teacher should set up student groups in advance. The Student Worksheet can be distributed as one copy per group or one per person.
