• Unit Outline

  
  

  The unit focuses on leaders and leadership. With each lesson, students will build a presentation on leadership. For the second lesson in the series, students will research leaders in different industries and explain how the leaders fit the group’s definition of leadership. In the first lesson, students worked with a group to create a definition for leadership and design a corresponding poster (slide) to illustrate their definition. For the third lesson, students will create profiles for two leaders they selected and compare/contrast them to examine different types of leadership. During the unit’s fourth lesson students will complete a presentation on leadership.

  Leadership is an essential life and career skill. It is important for students to learn about leadership while in school and as they prepare to enter the workplace. By discussing the characteristics of leaders and practicing leadership skills such as collaboration and communication, students can develop as aspiring leaders, who will positively impact their communities and respective industries.

  • Have experience with online research and working in a small group.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To open the lesson, return Part 1 sticky notes. Students wrote about a leader who fits their group’s description of leadership in the previous lesson. With their group, students will discuss the follwing questions:
     • How do the people we selected demonstrate leadership?
     • What are common characteristics among the three leaders?
  2. Distribute the graphic organizer for organizational leaders (see Student Handouts).
  • Suggest to students to include the leaders they wrote about on their sticky notes. Let students know that the leaders can be well-known, from the local community, or school.
  • Students will consult at least 5 online sources to locate the following information:
  1. • • Name of the leader and organization
       • Three words to describe the leader’s characteristics
       • Three specific examples of the leader’s responsibilities
       • Explanation on how the leader fits the group’s leadership definition.
  2. Students will conduct research on leaders and their responsibilities from eight different industries to complete the graphic organizer with their group.
     • Remind students to paraphrase (put into their own words) the information about responsibilities rather than copying and pasting information from websites.
     • Students will make inferences about the characteristics of each leader.
  3. To bring the lesson to a close, ask each student to think about how they demonstrate leadership. Students will write 5 responsibilities in their lives that are similar to the leaders’ responsibilities
     
     • As students share responses, compile a class list of student responsibilties and display on the chart paper titled leadership from Part 1.

  • This lesson builds on the activity students completed in Part 1.
  • Students may need a review of reliable online sources.
  • Students can choose how to divide the work among group members. A suggestion is for each student to complete the information for at least 2 leaders.
  • If students are studying a specific industry, the teacher can adapt the lesson to have students research multiple leaders in the same industry.

  Formative Assessment Ideas:

  • The teacher will observe students as they work in groups and conduct their online research.
  • The teacher can review each group's graphic organizer as students are working.

  Accommodation Ideas:

  • The teacher can provide a list of leaders if students need additional support. Suggestions include Tom Brady, Jeff Bezos, Beyonce, Malala Yousafzai, Anne Frank.
  • The modified student handout can be provided for additional guidance.

  Extension Ideas:

  • Students can interview leaders from one of the industries on the list such as a community/school leader.
