Demonstrate that to be a function, from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range.

Essential Understandings


  • Evaluate an expression using substitution (e.g., find the value of 4x = y, when x = 2, y = 8 using manipulatives).
  • Input - domain (x), Output (y)

    Input - domain (x), Output (y) values in a T-chart.
  • Recognize in an ordered pair that the first number represents the domain (x-value) and the second number represents the range (y-value).
  • Understand function notation (e.g., in y = f(x) is another way to write y is f(x), also stated f of x).
  • Understand x as the input and y as the output (cause and effect).
  • Understand that the graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).
