Using a representation, decompose a fraction into multiple copies of a unit fraction (e.g., 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4+ 1/4).
Clarifications:

Essential Understandings

Concrete:

  • Using fraction manipulatives, model a whole and then decompose (i.e., divide) it into equal parts to create unit fractions (i.e., fractions where 1 is the numerator). For example: 1 = 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 or 1 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
  • Using fraction manipulatives, model a non-unit fraction (i.e., a fraction where 1 is not the numerator) and then decompose the fraction into unit fractions. For example: 2/3 = 1/3 + 1/3 or 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
Representation:
  • Understand how parts of a whole can be expressed as fractions using numbers.
  • Understand the following concepts, symbols, and vocabulary: numerator, denominator, fraction, decompose, unit fraction.

Cluster: Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers. (Major Cluster)

Clusters should not be sorted from Major to Supporting and then taught in that order. To do so would strip the coherence of the mathematical ideas and miss the opportunity to enhance the major work of the grade with the supporting clusters.
