This lesson begins with a learning scale to determine where students believe they are in regard to determining unknown whole numbers in equations with four or more whole numbers. The teacher will then model solving unknowns in equations with 4 or more whole numbers using base 10 blocks. Students are then given the opportunity to practice the skill with a partner, and are asked to write to explain their work. The students will be engaged through the use of manipulatives, teacher questioning, and partner practice as they begin to work on solving unknowns in more complex equations than they may be used to.
