  Knowing how to communicate appropriately online is a soft skill used in any job and will help students be prepared for interactions in the workplace. When students know how to use online communication tools effectively, they will show employers they have necessary workplace skills.

  Students will be able to:

  • Create a digital product that lists strategies for effective online communication.
  • Propose solution(s) to address the use of inappropriate online communication with team members.
  • Use strategies to communicate effectively through online tools and with partner.

  • What makes communication appropriate or inappropriate when working as a team?
  • Why is appropriate communication important to team members in the workplace?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, ask students if they ever have received inappropriate or confusing communication when working as a team member (or in a group).
     • Follow up by asking students the guiding question, “What makes communication appropriate or inappropriate when working as a team?”
     • Review types of online/digital tools that can be used for communication.
  2. Refer to the case study, "Using Online Tools to Communicate Appropriately,” (see CPALMS resource ID # 209266)
     • Provide students with a copy of the case study so they can take notes, underline examples of inappropriate communication or important ideas.
     • Pose the following questions:
       • How do the different modes of communication in the case study differ?
       • Why is appropriate communication important for team members in the workplace?
  3. Provide students with the graphic organizer (see attachments).
     • Using the graphic organizer (see attachments) students will identify 5 examples of inappropriate communication from the case study and provide an appropriate communication response using each online tool.
     • Have them reread the case study to find the information necessary to complete the graphic organizer.
     • The graphic organizer (see attachments) can be completed with a shoulder partner.
  4. After students complete the graphic organizer, pose these questions to students and engage them in a class discussion.
     • What are some proper ways to communicate appropriately using online tools?
     • What strategies can be used when someone communicates inappropriately?
  5. Have students collaborate with their partner to create a digital poster, webpage, or slideshow, with 3 strategies to communicate appropriately using online tools that can be used for training employees or setting group norms in class.
  6. To bring the lesson to a close, have students complete the exit ticket (see attachments). Have students include, in their own words, one strategy when using online tools to communicate appropriately and explain how it is effective.

  • For the introduction, have students draw from student experiences in clubs, school projects, and extracurricular activities to mimic the workplace environment.
  • Have students print the posters to hang around the classroom or school.

  • Review students' exit tickets to ensure they understand at least one strategy for using online tools to communicate appropriately.
