  In this lesson students will develop career building skills to critically think about leadership roles and effective teams. They will conduct research on leadership roles and consider what makes positive team relationships. Students will discuss relationship skills to manage conflict and build positive relationships.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, refer to the case study, “Effective Leadership and Teamwork.” (See CPALMS Resource ID# 209590.
     • Provide students with a copy of the case study so they can take notes, highlight, or underline important details.
  2. Pose the following discussion questions as the case study is read.
     • What type of leader does Dr. Williams seem to be?
     • What do you think makes coworkers an effective team?
     • How do Annie and Dr. Williams play a role in this scenario?
  3. Have students break into groups of four.
  4. Provide students with the Leadership and Teamwork handout (see attachments). First, have them use classroom resources or research online for the four most common types of leadership styles. Have them write a very brief description of each and then choose which type of leader they think Dr. Williams is. Discuss as a class which type of leadership students think is the most effective.
  5. Next, have students look in the textbook for your class or use a dictionary to find the definition of teamwork and write it down in their own words. Have students continue conducting research about personal characteristics that help make a good team. Examples could include assisting others when you see they need help, maintaining a positive attitude, avoid criticizing other team members, learning good communication skills, etc. Also, have students research methods that can be used to create positive team relationships. These prompts are found on the Leadership and Teamwork handout.
  6. Ask students, "How did the characters in the case study display any of these characteristics?" and "How could the team in the case study build a more positive relationship with one another?"
  7. To bring the lesson to a close, have students prepare an outcome to the situation written as a role play for the case study. Their outcome should include some of the characteristics of good team members and methods of positive team building they researched earlier.

  Extension Ideas:

  • Students can do research before or after reading the case study to find the personal/professional characteristics that make a good health care worker. Textbooks or online resources should define the following characteristics: empathy, honesty, dependability, willingness to learn, patience, enthusiasm, acceptance of criticism, responsibility, tact.
  • The written responses of the situation can be used as a role play where students act out the outcome of the scenario.
