  This lesson can be used within a unit focused on child growth and development, including principles of development, developmental theories and theorists, and the developmental domains. The unit can begin with lessons to develop background knowledge around the topic of developmental principles and then introduce the concepts of, and vocabulary related to developmental principles and theories of development. Students can research various developmental theories and related theorists before creating a presentation in this lesson. Additional lessons can focus on presenting and showcasing the research.

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Before beginning this lesson, ensure that students have completed research on a developmental theory related to early childhood education.
     • See Teacher Notes for additional CPALMS resources.
  2. To introduce the lesson, divide students into partners or groups of three. Provide each individual student with a Chat Card topic (see attachments) and ensure that each student in the pair or group has a different topic. Explain to students that they will each be giving a one-minute speech on the topic of their Chat Card. The task is to speak for twenty seconds on each of the provided details of the Chat Card topic. Encourage students to speak for the full twenty seconds and explain that no one else should be speaking or taking-turns during their one-minute speech.
     • Provide students a few minutes to think about what they want to say, and then set a timer for 20 seconds. Have students start giving their one-minute speeches, and provide a signal (i.e., a beep or by saying, “Time!”) for each twenty-second interval.

     • The purpose of the introductory activity is to introduce students to using time limits during their presentation.
  3. Explain to students that they will be creating a five-minute presentation to share their previously completed research on a developmental theory. Each student will act as the expert on the individual developmental theory that they researched and teach the rest of the class about it within the five-minute time frame.
     • Display the Presentation Requirements attachment and ensure that students are aware of what type of information should be covered in their presentation.

  4. Remind students that the goal of the developmental theory research is to help answer the question, “How have different theories of child development influenced the teaching of young children?"
  5. Provide students with an electronic copy of the Developmental Theory Research PowerPoint attachment. Students may use the attachment as a template or can modify and change as they wish.

  6. Provide time for students to review their research and create their presentation slides.
  7. To close the lesson, have students show their slides to a partner and have partners check that their presentations are comprehensive and include the necessary information from the Presentation Requirements.

  • CPALMS Resource IDs # 206490, 206627, include lessons to build prior knowledge about developmental principles. CPALMS Resource ID # 206736 includes a lesson and a graphic organizer for collecting developmental theory research used in the presentations. Teachers may choose to begin a unit with these lessons. CPALMS Resource IDs #207250 includes a follow-up lesson in which students present their presentations and take notes on the other theories that their classmates researched.
  • In place of the Chat Card topics, teachers can verbally give all students a different topic for each 20 second interval.
  • The Developmental Theory Research V2 PowerPoint has boxes with directions to help guide students in creating their presentation. Likewise, students can start from scratch on PowerPoint and create their own presentation. Slides can be set to automatically change within the Transitions tab. Under Advance Slide, check the box for After and choose how many seconds the slide should be displayed. It is also helpful to make the transition duration 1 second. This may help students to time their presentations to five-minutes.
  • Teachers can choose to modify both the Presentation Requirements and Developmental Theory Research PowerPoint attachments based on student and classroom needs.
