This lesson combines many objectives for seventh grade students. Its goal is for students to create and carry out an investigation about student backpack mass. Students will develop a conclusion based on statistical and graphical analysis.

pH - The Power of Hydrogen Ions implies that the "power of health is in balance" with balanced "Hydrogen Ions." Life exists inside a certain range of pH values. In this activity, students work in collaborative learning groups to classify pH values. Students are faced with a problem of correcting possible affects of contaminating pollution. Scenarios of a problem statement help students apply factors to water resources in real world events. They recognize and explain that a scientific theory is well-supported and widely accepted explanation of nature and not simply a claim posed by an individual. Students may prove their proposal by performing a pH wet lab with common kitchen solutions.

In this lesson developed by the PBS documentary series POV (Point of View), students will explore how the United States' immigration policy affects families with mixed citizenship status. They will first discuss the challenges faced by a mixed-status family when U.S. immigration authorities schedule undocumented parents to be deported. Students will also explain how the circumstances of such families could impact the United States politically, socially and economically. Finally, they will analyze public policies that address the needs of mixed-status families.

This lesson features a clip from the film Sin País (Without Country), a documentary that tells the emotional story of a family with members of mixed citizenship status who separate when the undocumented parents are deported from the United States and their teenage children stay behind to continue their education.

This is lesson five of a five-part unit on the Six Essential Elements of Geography. Students will conduct a short research project and select textual evidence and images from their research as they apply the 6 Essential Elements to a city as a framework for understanding it and the people who live there.
