This task is primarily about volume and surface area, although it also gives students an early look at converting between measurements in scale models and the real objects to which they correspond. Students are not required to understand the general principles for converting between measurements in scale drawings (or models) and measurements in their referents until 7th grade (see 7.G.1), but here they are given the conversion explicitly.
It would be appropriate to ask the student to decide whether a half-inch cube is suitable for constructing the model to further address the scope of MAFS.6.G.1.2.
