  This lesson helps students develop professional communication as students express ideas clearly through role-play and provide constructive peer feedback.

  This lessons helps build collaboration and teamwork by requiring students to work in pairs and small groups to analyze problems and co-create solutions.

  Students also practice problem-solving and conflict resolution by identifying missteps in the case study and proposing strategies to prevent similar issues in real-world settings.

  1. Why is it important to communicate with people you are working on a team with?
  2. How can effective team members contribute to an organization's smooth operation and efficiency?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. Begin with a brief class discussion of the following guiding question: Why is it important to communicate with people you are working on a team with?
  2. Introduce the case study,“Lost in Paperwork," (see CPALMS ID #219985). Ask students to read the case in pairs and highlight points where clear communication or accurate documentation would have prevented the issue. Give class 5 minute to discuss the case.

  3. Create a T-chart on the board with two columns labeled “Effective” and “Not Effective.” As a class, have students contribute ideas to each side, identifying communication strategies and behaviors that help or hinder teamwork.

  4. Divide students into teams of 2 people.

     Each team will engage in a role-play activity by acting out a conversation between Baburam and Bipin (students may choose who plays each role). During the role-play:

     a) the characters will share their perspective on what went wrong, identifying and discussing the mistakes made during the process.
     
     b) the characters will share ideas about how the situation could have been resolved more effectively, suggesting possible solutions in real time.
     
     c) and, the characters will discuss future strategies for improving communication and efficiency, as if planning next steps to prevent similar issues.

  5. Before presenting the role-plays, distribute the attached handout, Peer Role-Play Feedback Form, to every student. Each pair will choose the group next to them and take turns presenting their role-play and ideas to one another. As they observe, students will provide constructive feedback (using the handout) on the communication strategies used, identifying what was effective and what could be improved. This peer exchange encourages active listening, reflection, and collaborative learning without requiring every group to present to the entire class.

  6. To close the activity, facilitate a reflective discussion with the following questions:

     1. What communication strategy do you think you should work on?
     2. How can practicing effective communication skills help you in the workplace?
     3. Would the strategies we discussed would be effective for Eric as well? Or in different workplace contexts?
