  This lesson is designed to be used with the case study, “Training Day: The Importance of Professionalism in the Workplace.” See CPALMS resource ID# 209769.  This is part 2 of a 2-part lesson, it should be completed after Lesson one, “The Importance of Professionalism in the Workplace.” See CPALMS resource ID # 209891.

  In this second lesson of a two-part series, students will create a PPT presentation that demonstrates their ability to identify the following: appropriate business communication, elements of professionalism, and methods of giving and receiving feedback.

  • Why are professionalism and effective communication essential parts of the workplace?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, teacher will present the discussion question, “Why are professionalism and effective communication essential parts of the workplace?” again to the students in whole group. 

  2. Redistribute the case study. Explain to students that they will be using their research from Lesson 1: The Importance of Professionalism in the Workplace, in order to create a PPT presentation that can be used to train new hires at a company. 

  • Teacher can answer display the following discussion/focus questions and answer any questions before group work begins. Allow students time to discuss the case study.
    • How might company training have impacted Alexis’ performance?
    • What information would Alexis benefit most from learning?
    • What are some take important aways from the case study that you would add to your presentation (lessons/advice for new hires)?
    • What are the important elements of a presentation?

  3. Allow students time to discuss their research completed in lesson one and begin to relate it to creating a PPT.

  • Teacher can pose the question, “What makes a presentation engaging to an audience?” Student answers can be recorded on the board/displayed digitally.
  • Teacher will explain the PPT presentation and ensure that students are in group of up to 4.
  • The sample PPT presentation can be reviewed before students begin group work.

  4. Explain to students that, using their research from lesson 1, students will create a PPT with at least one slide of information for each category.

  • Students can use the provided template (see attachments) and make the necessary changes to create a more engaging presentation or create a new PPT/Slides presentation of their own. Teacher can also have students create their presentation using any online digital platform.

  5. After the students have completed their PPT presentations, the teacher can then choose to have students present their PPTs to another small group to simulate a workplace training experience.

  • While the students are presenting the students who are watching the presentation can take notes on what they learned from the presentation, either in journals, on notecards/sticky notes or digitally on an online forum.

  6. To close the lesson, the teacher can choose to have select groups of students present their PPT presentations to the whole group.

  • The students can also submit an exit ticket listing at least 2-3 new ideas they learned from watching another group’s PPT presentation and write a short summary of essential workplace professionalism and communication skills.

  Extension Idea:

  • Students can write a guide that accompanies their PPT on suggested ways to present to different groups i.e. new hires versus current employees who could also benefit from training in professionalism
