  • What are some considerations to make when attempting to design a website to be accessible for everyone?

• Procedure

  
  

  1. To introduce the lesson, pose the following guiding question: “What is accessibility and why is accessibility an important consideration in web design?” Discuss with the class what accessibility means. Continue to discuss with the class as a whole the following probing questions:

  • How could businesses be impacted by not having accessible web pages?
  • How are individuals impacted by not being able to read a web page because of their visual impairments?
  • How would you feel if you could not read a web page?”

  2. Provide students with note-taking paper, or have students take out a blank sheet of paper for notes. Tell students that their task will be to develop a checklist of ADA guidelines for building a website. Explain that as the case study and handout are discussed, students should take notes on anything that they think is important to remember for the checklist. The notes will be used later in the lesson.

  3. Distribute the case study, “Fix it for Everyone.” (See CPALMS Resources #209637).

  • Students will read the text and highlight three sentences that stood out to them.
  • Encourage discussion about the case study by prompting students to share the sentences that they highlighted and why they found those sentences important.

  4. Distribute the handout for ADA Guidelines (see attachments). Briefly review the history of ADA with the students and the ADA guidelines using the handout. Be sure to point out some of the important accessibility barriers such as having color contrast in text, alt text for images, and captions for videos.

  • Students will partner talk to discuss the case study and ADA Guideline details.
  • Working with their partner, students will develop a digital checklist using available software programs and the ADA guidelines document to show important criteria to consider when building a website.

  5. To bring the lesson to a close, have students write a summary of the concepts presented in the materials.

  • Allow time for students to present their digital checklists to the rest of the class.

  • The teacher should explicitly review with the students the ADA guidelines excerpt.
  • A helpful resource is https://www.ada.gov/resources/web-guidance/ to use to share the history of ADA.
  • Ensure that discussion also focused on why accessibility matters.
  • For the note taking, as teacher reviews ADA, students can write down important points to remember when they are formulating their checklist.
