  In this lesson students will gain understanding of the short and long term effects of online posts. The students will determine what constitutes ethical and unethical behaviors, and develop knowledge of potential consequences for workplace rule infractions.

  • What right do employers have to regulate employees' personal social media?
  • How can social media accounts impact current or future employment?
  • What unethical behaviors, if any, were demonstrated by the employee?

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, review case study, The Socialite Post Gone Wrong, (See CPALMS Resource ID: 207969).
  2. Distribute the social media thread (see attachment).
     • Assign a few students a role to read out loud from the social media thread.
     • Provide all students a copy of the social media thread to follow along and take notes if desired.
  3. Discuss the following guiding questions: What right do employers have to regulate employees' personal social media? How can social media posts impact current or future employment? What unethical behaviors were demonstrated by the actions of the employee?
  4. Have students debate from both the perspective of the employee and the owner any, if present, unethical behaviors Daniela participated in (assign a side or the argument if needed).
  5. Teacher will read outcome of the meeting, and open discussion of students’ thoughts.
  6. Review and describe the components of a professional email such a brief subject line, greeting, closing, electronic signature and proper grammar (i.e.: no text abbreviations, no excessive punctuation, etc.).
     • Provide examples of professional versus unprofessional emails.
  7. Students will draft a professional email as Daniela writing an apology letter to her employer.
  8. To bring the lesson to a close, students will complete an exit ticket via online discussion board or particiapte in a group discussion (depending on time and teacher preference) on the risks Daniela took when posting to social media, and ways Daniela could have reduced her risks, including being fired.

  • If conversation starters are needed, focus on the ‘tone’ of the text thread (all capitals, excessive punctuation, etc.), the tone of the students who read it out loud if applicable, and the timestamps of the messages sent by the employee (during working hours).

  • Teachers can use the apology email in which students are asked to use professional language, correct grammar and proper formatting as a formative assessment.

  Extension Ideas

  • Segway into lessons on communication and how tone and body language matter.
  • Provide examples of company employee handbooks, hiring and orientation procedures to discuss the social media rules.
  • Research high profile misuse of social media and the consequences (celebrities, artist, politicians, etc).
