• Unit Outline

  
  

  This is a three-part lesson series. In part one, students research and compare different forms of fundraising as well as rules and regulations involved with creating and holding a fundraiser in the state of Florida. In part two, students determine a non-profit organization or cause in need of funding, and create a fundraising plan. In part three, students present their plan to the non-profit organization’s board of directors, (aka, the other students in their class).

  As students research and plan a fundraiser, they will demonstrate knowledge and organizational skills related to event planning. Students will demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with team members, they will demonstrate interpersonal skills, professional behavior, and respect for the opinions of others. They will also explain how events such as fundraisers are planned and will demonstrate ethical behavior when recognizing the importance of the non-profit organization’s outreach to its clients.

  • Determine an innovative way to fundraise for their chosen non-profit organization, group, or cause in need of funding.
  • Identify challenges that may arise regarding their choice of fundraising.
  • Revise their plans based on challenges identified.

  Students should be familiar with/able to:

  • Determine why and how non-profit organizations or groups benefit from fundraising.
  • Based on their research, delineate the use of fundraising activities or events.
  • Determine what legal steps are necessary to obtain permission to hold their fundraiser.

  • How does the plan recognize gender, religious, and culturally appropriate behaviors?
  • What challenges may occur when developing the plan and how are those challenges addressed?
  • What elements of the plan create “buy-in” and increase participation?
  • How does the plan demonstrate the ability to show empathy, respect, and support for others?
  • What benefit will the recipients of the fundraising receive? (i.e. more research dollars, more volunteers, etc.)

   

• Procedure

  
  
  1. To introduce the lesson, teachers may choose to hold a brief discussion of students’ findings regarding steps necessary to legitimize their fundraiser. As part of this discussion, teachers may choose to ask the following questions as well as clarify any questions students may have regarding the process of creating a fundraiser.
     •  What forms are necessary for obtaining permission to hold a fundraiser in the state of Florida?
     • What challenges did you encounter when researching and planning a fundraiser?
     • What elements of your research surprised you? Why?
  2. To frame the lesson, review the “Small Charitable Organizations Sponsors Application” (attached) with students as well as Florida Statute 496.405: Registration statements by charitable organizations and sponsors (attached), and the Florida Rule Chapter 5J-7 (attached)
     • • Explain to students that they will be creating a plan for implementing their fundraising idea using the proposal sheet (attached) while keeping in mind the forms required by the state of Florida that they read in part one and reviewed in part two.
       • Students will complete their proposal sheet and plan presentation notes
       • Students will share their completed proposal sheets and presentional ideas with others in the class
       • Students will adjust their proposal sheets based on peer feedback
  3. To bring the lesson to a close, teachers may choose to bring the class back together for a brief discussion using the guiding questions as a starting point.

  • While it is helpful if students have been involved in a fundraising activity or have attended a fundraising event before, it is not necessary.
  • It is important to note that students should be innovative in their ideas for fundraising and create an original idea.
  • Teachers may choose to share examples of event advertising for events that fundraise for causes such as cancer research or Alzheimer’s research.
  • Teachers can provide feedback throughout the activity and redirect students if necessary.
  • Teachers can take a more active role in helping students choose the group or cause they want to consider.
  • Teachers may choose to make the activity a group or partner project.

  Formative Assessment Ideas:

  • Teachers can collect students’ completed activity or event outline to check for accuracy and completion.
  • Students can be informally assessed during class through short student/teacher conferences.

  • Students can reflect on their learning by completing a project analysis.

  • If teachers choose to make the activity a group or partner project, they can partner students who may need additional support accordingly.
