General Course Information and Notes
VERSION DESCRIPTION
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Elective is an academic elective course that prepares students for college and career readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long, academic elective course. Each week, students receive instruction that utilizes a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center and aligned to the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework. Students engage in learning tasks that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR®) to support their academic growth. Additionally, students engage in tutor-facilitated tutorials, academic success skills, and in motivational activities centered around exploring college and career opportunities and developing their student agency.
The 12th grade AVID Elective course serves as the culminating phase in equipping students for the dual challenges of higher education and career readiness. Senior year commences with a comprehensive checklist of critical preparatory tasks, including the completion of college applications, the crafting of professional resumes, the acquisition of letters of recommendation, and the refinement of interview techniques. These tasks are seamlessly integrated into the "Ready! Set! Go! Transition!" units, which provide a structured framework for ongoing progress throughout the academic year.
Students establish Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals that align with their post-secondary aspirations. The curriculum scaffolds their transition to independence through AVID senior tutorials, which incrementally release responsibility while fostering academic self-reliance. In a reflective and visionary exercise inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches, students create detailed blueprints of their futures, articulating their ambitions and pathways to achievement.
A key focus of the curriculum is the development of concise short-response writing skills, a critical competency for both college and scholarship applications. Students also engage in a pragmatic unit on financing higher education, equipping them with essential knowledge of financial planning, scholarship acquisition, and cost management. Innovation and problem-solving are further cultivated through a STEM-centered unit on space exploration, which challenges students to think creatively and collaboratively.
As a capstone to their high school journey, seniors finalize their checklist by devising comprehensive summer transition plans, ensuring a seamless progression to post-secondary education or career pathways. This holistic approach equips students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to excel in their forthcoming endeavors.
