Clarifications:
Essential Understandings
Concrete:
- Use objects to complete a ten frame.
(Ex: given a ten frame with one counter already included, have student add nine more counters to fill the 10 frame).
- Given 10 objects, the student will separate them into two separate sets to show different ways to make 10. (Ex: 2 objects in one set and 8 in the other).
- Use a number line to count on from a given number to 10. (Ex: place counter on the number 2 on the number line and student will count the number of ‘units’ to get to the number 10).

Cluster:
Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. (Major Cluster) : Clusters should not be sorted from Major to Supporting and then taught in that order. To do so would strip the coherence of the mathematical ideas and miss the opportunity to enhance the major work of the grade with the supporting clusters. |
