Professional Development Path for Elementary Teachers of Mathematics: In this series of four modules, elementary mathematics teachers will be introduced to formative assessment, gain a deeper understanding of a few key standards in the operations and algebra domain in the state standards for mathematics, and learn how to access, use, and provide feedback on Florida’s K-3 Mathematics Formative Assessment System through CPALMS.

MFAS Module 1: Introduction to Formative Assessment for Teachers This module is designed to give elementary mathematics teachers an overview of formative assessment, introduce them to the definition of formative assessment used in designing MFAS, share research findings related to formative assessment and key strategies for using formative assessment, and describe how formative assessment supports differentiated instruction. All these will help teachers use formative assessment to guide instructional decisions and realize potentially significant increases in student achievement.

MFAS Module 2: Accessing and Implementing MFAS This module introduces teachers to the MFAS tasks and rubrics, shows teachers how to access MFAS resources through CPALMS, and orients teachers to the MFAS Process.

MFAS Module 3: Knowledge in Using MFAS Process This module is designed to give teachers a simulated experience using the MFAS process. In this module, teachers will study one standard from the operations and algebra domain, review research on student thinking related to this standard, study a task designed to elicit evidence of student thinking, study the rubric associated with the task, and view videos of students talking about their thinking.

MFAS Module 4: Implementing MFAS with English Language Learners (ELL) In this module, we will give you tools that will help you implement the MFAS effectively to all your students, regardless of their English language proficiency level. This module is not intended to be a comprehensive training on instruction for ELLs. Rather, it is designed specifically for the MFAS.
